For one hundred years, Electric Supply has serviced Charleston, SC. The company
was established in 1901
by Mr. T.A. Brookbanks, Sr. -> -> -> -> -> ->
He received
his electrical engineering
degree from Clemson College. In March, 1906, the company was incorporated in the state of
South Carolina. The charter reads "to allow the business of electricians and dealers in
electrical apparatus, appliances, and supplies and any business in which the application
of electricity may be useful".
In April, 1906, Electric Supply Company became associated
with the Waverly
Electric Automobile Company to perform all repairs on the electric car.
<- <- <- Mr. T.A. Brookbanks, Jr. became president upon his father's
death in 1935. He managedthe company with his excellent business leadership
until 1971, when he became chairman of
the board until his death in 1972. Mr. Eddie Melton had joined Electric
Supply Company in 1953,
and in March, 1960,
he was promoted to vice-president.
                 
Mr. Melton -> -> -> assumed presidency in 1971.
In 1994 Electric Supply Company was divided into two
companies, Electric Supply Co., Inc.
and ESC Elevator Company. Mr. Melton sold Electric Supply Co., Inc. to employees Carlton
B. (Carl) Hunter and Wilfred H. (Hal) Gooding. Mr. Melton continued as president of ESC
Elevator Comany.
Carl served as president until his retirement
in 2003. Hal assumed the office of president at at that time and continues in this
capacity today.
The first offices of Electric Supply Company were located at 161 Meeting Street, Charleston.
In addition to contracting, electrical appliances, light fixtures, and other electrical
supplies were sold. This location was also a motor rewind shop. On September 29, 1938, a
tornado, which killed 31 people in downtown Charleston, damaged this building. There was a
fire there in the 1940's. In the early 1970's the company moved to Morrison Drive briefly
and then to 2006 Cherry Hill Lane, where they remained until 1995. The offices and
warehouse are currently in North Charleston, at 3225 Pacific Street.
From the inception, Electric Supply has always maintained its standing as an open
shop contractor. They have grown from one employee and a truck to an average employment
of fifty people and a fleet of 24 vehicles.
